Key Findings

Google has a market share of 92+% across all platforms. Second on the list in Bing at ~2.8%
Google is not the most used search engine in only 2 countries – China and Russia.
Google accounts for 96% of global mobile search traffic, 91.94% of tablet search traffic, 86.35% of desktop search traffic and 64.21% of console search traffic.
In the US, DuckDuckGo is the third most popular search engine on mobile devices.

Global Market Share of Leading Search Engines ⚙️

Undoubtedly, Google dominates the worldwide search engine market across the mobile, desktop, and tablet segments with a current market share of 92.96% [1].

The other 4 leading search engines (Bing, Yahoo, Yandex, DuckDuckGo) make up a combined market share of 4.34%, with only Bing and Yahoo above 1% each.

Between Q1 2017 and Q2 2023, DuckDuckGo (a search engine that doesn’t track users to offer personalized ads) grew its market share from 0.15% to 0.53%.

Search Engine Market Share By Device 📱

Desktop

As with every device type, Google leads the global desktop search engine market with a share of 87.52%, followed by Bing – 6.77% and Yahoo – 2.06% as of Q2 2023 [2].

Mobile

In Q2 2023, Google accounted for 96% of the mobile search engine market worldwide [3].

Second on the list is Yandex at 1.03% of the mobile search engine market share.

Yahoo is the 3rd most popular search engine worldwide on mobile devices, claiming a market share of 0.6%.

Tablet

The latest worldwide tablet search engine market share statistics show that Google is a top choice for online search among tablet users globally with a market share of 91.94% in Q2 2023 [4].

Bing and Yandex claimed 2nd and 3rd spot in the ranking, with a share of 4.52% and 1.14%, respectively.

Console

Console search engine market share statistics show fluctuations of individual players’ share in the market over time, but Google claimed the largest piece of the market (64.21% in Q2 2023), followed by Bing accounting for 33.82% of worldwide online searches on console devices [5].

Search Engine Market Share in the United States 🗽

Google is the category leader of online search in the United States with a market share of 88.95% (vs. Google’s worldwide market share of 92.96%) in Q2 2023. Bing followed at 6.42%, and Yahoo at 2.28% [6].

US Search Engine Market Share by Device 🦅

Desktop

In June 2023, Google led the US desktop search engine market with a share of 82.1%. Bing came 2nd in the ranking with a 12.55% desktop search market share in the US. This is followed by Yahoo with 2.91% and DuckDuckGo at 1.59% [7].

Despite Google holding a major share of the desktop market, its dominance (by %) in the desktop category is lowest compared to other device types.

Mobile

In June 2023, Google’s mobile search engine market share in the United States amounted to 95.76%. Meanwhile, Yahoo and DuckDuckGo took the remaining spots with a 1.13% and 1.14% market share, respectively [8].

Notably, DuckDuckGo overtook Bing (2nd used search engine among desktop users) in the mobile category, 1.11% vs. 0.82%.

Tablet

In the tablet search engine category, Google remained in its dominant position with a US market share of 86.86%. Its leading competitor – Bing claimed 9.55% of the category, followed by DuckDuckGo at 1.5% [9].

In May 2023, Google was the most used search engine in 233 countries/areas out of 235 countries/areas included in the analysis (except China and Russia). Furthermore, only in 24 countries/areas Google’s market share was below 90% [10].
