In March, Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute announced completion of its state-of-the-art cath lab, with the first next ten image-guided therapy system was being designed to reduce radiation exposure, decrease prep and procedure time and visually eliminate human error in the preparation and treatment of patients being treated for both heart disease and neurovascular disease.

A Multidisciplinary Approach

The driving concept is to create platforms for innovation. To enable an expansion that, historically had been a rare environment of multidisciplinary collaboration, will —the team believes, ensure that patient care will be better and more efficient. The goals of improving operating efficiency includes supporting multidisciplinary team and integrative approach. In addition, the enhanced technology and design will allow team members to better anticipate and adopt procedures and technologies of the future.

Control Room Hub

The unique design of the cath lab will take some getting used to. Instead of having a separate group of suites for each discipline, all the rooms are interdigitated. The control room serves as a central command center or hub. At any given time, various procedures will be taking place side-by-side. The director echoes the belief that by encouraging physicians of different disciplines to work closely with one another, it will reduce or eliminate the competition between disciplines.

State-of-the-Art Suites

In this futuristic cath lab, it seems they have thought of everything. Each room is committed to image-guided therapy first, whether it be coronary, electrophysiology, vascular, or neurovascular. Furthermore, a single patient can undergo multiple procedures back to back or simultaneously. Since it could also involve the need for surgery, all the suites can be readied for use as an OR.

How This Benefits the Patient

Virtually any patient who requires any type of image-guided therapy is going to benefit from this technology. Having their procedure done in an environment where physicians of all different specialties are working side-by-side, is a key differentiator. This will have the greatest impact when the unexpected happens like complications or an evolving pathology. It’s the ability to engage with other doctors from a different specialty or have a different expertise or a certain skill quickly, that makes the difference in outcomes.

A fortunate side effect: the spirit of everybody chipping in and helping from these disciplines is palpable. While it’s hard to quantify, patients and staff do seem to benefit from it, as well as the physicians.
