Esperto Medical’s Resonance Sonomanometry™ technology will be developed to enable continuous, calibration-free cardiovascular monitoring for terrestrial environments and spaceflight.

FULLERTON, Calif., Nov. 6, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Esperto Medical, Inc., a healthtech startup specializing in critical care and remote patient monitoring, announced today it has received a grant from the Translational Research Institute for Space Health (TRISH).

The grant will support the development and adaptation of Esperto’s proprietary Resonance Sonomanometry™ (RSM) technology for use in microgravity and extreme environments. RSM uses sound waves at different frequencies to directly measure blood pressure within arteries, avoiding the variability of other approaches – and requires no calibration, making it easy to set up and use.

Continuous monitoring is a critical capability for spaceflight, where fluid shifts and cardiovascular stress pose complex health challenges. Esperto’s RSM technology directly addresses these challenges by enabling assessment of the following data autonomously:

  • Venous Flow & Thrombosis Risk: Characterizes central venous blood flow patterns in the internal jugular vein (IJV) to evaluate thrombosis risk.
  • Continuous Hemodynamics: Measures beat-to-beat blood pressure directly, along with pulse rate, and respiration rate.
  • Vascular Structure: Assesses arterial stiffness, wall thickness, and vessel radius.

During spaceflight, environmental conditions like microgravity trigger physiological adaptations—such as cephalad fluid shifts, arterial stiffening, and cardiovascular deconditioning. Notably, the discovery of internal jugular vein (IJV) thrombosis in astronauts highlighted the urgent need to monitor central venous flow patterns to detect and manage spaceflight-associated risks early.

“Monitoring human cardiovascular health in space requires technology that is compact, highly accurate, and completely autonomous,” said Dr. Alaina Brinley Rajagopal, MD, PhD, Chief Medical Officer and Co-Founder of Esperto Medical. “Standard blood pressure cuffs and invasive lines present clear operational and clinical limitations during long-duration missions. This support from TRISH allows us to optimize our ultrasound platform for astronauts while simultaneously accelerating medical innovations that benefit critical care, remote medicine, and underserved patients on Earth.”
